The Met Gala prides itself on being the most exclusive night in fashion. The velvet rope is not just symbolic – it’s a statement. And this year, that statement felt louder than ever for one very notable absentee: Meghan Markle.
Because while cameras flashed and the industry’s most powerful names climbed those iconic steps, the Duchess of Sussex, 44, was nowhere to be seen. And to be clear, she was not fashionably late. Just absent. In a room where presence is power, the royal’s absence speaks volumes.
It is particularly striking given the timing. Just days before the gala, King Charles and Queen Camilla were in New York, where they met with Anna Wintour – the woman who has quite literally controlled the Met Gala guest list for decades.

Wintour, now a Companion of Honour after being recognised by the King earlier this year for her services to fashion, has long been an ardent supporter of the Royal Family.
She was also in attendance at a high-profile reception during the state visit, reinforcing those ties in full view of the industry.
Which makes Meghan’s continued absence from fashion’s most important night feel less like a coincidence – and more like a quiet but cutting exclusion.
Let’s be clear: Meghan Markle has never attended the Met Gala. Not before stepping into royal life, not during, and not in the six years since relocating to the United States amid Megexit.

For someone who has spent the past few years repositioning herself firmly within the lifestyle and fashion space, that omission is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. Especially now.
This isn’t just about one event. It’s about where she sits, and right now, she doesn’t have a seat at the fashion hierarchy table.
Earlier this year, Meghan was notably absent from British Vogue’s 2025 “Best Dressed” rankings, as well as the publication’s influential “Vogue 25” list.
Meanwhile, Princess Catherine secured the top spot on British Vogue’s inaugural list of the 50 best-dressed Britons. That contrast alone tells a story – one of relevance, influence, and who the industry is choosing to champion. And if the Met Gala is fashion’s ultimate seating plan, Meghan’s name appears to have been left off the chart entirely.

Inside the event, the message was only amplified. Kim Kardashian delivered her usual headline-grabbing moment.
Beyoncé dominated the conversation with a look that balanced spectacle and control. Even rising names – including influencer Emma Chamberlain – were granted access to the world’s most exclusive carpet. While nepo baby Romeo Beckham made the guest list, which only makes Meghan’s absence feel even more glaring.
That, in itself, says everything. When influencers and even celebrity offspring like baby Beckham, son of David and Victoria Beckham, are securing invitations to fashion’s most exclusive night, yet a globally recognised duchess is not, it raises a very uncomfortable question.

What exactly is Meghan Markle’s standing in fashion right now? Because this is a woman who has made it clear she wants to be part of that world.
Just last month, she launched a new fashion-focused venture, selling her personal wardrobe through the AI-powered platform OneOff – a business in which she is both a participant and an investor.
Speaking to The Weekly in Australia, Meghan said: “Fashion is one of the most powerful industries. It influences how we feel and what we project. And even if you don’t say a word, you can convey something in what you wear.”
The message is clear: she understands fashion’s influence, and she wants to be in that conversation. But wanting a seat at the table and being given one are two very different things.

The Met Gala isn’t about side hustles or personal branding. It runs on cultural currency – and that can’t be bought, packaged or launched. It’s earned, curated and, crucially, granted.
Right now, Meghan Markle isn’t holding any of it. And you can’t ignore the optics.
While the world watched the green carpet and headlines rolled in by the second, the industry she’s so visibly trying to break into carried on without her – loudly, unapologetically, and in full view. Not exactly a quiet night.
What makes it sting more is who was in the room. Venus Williams, her close friend, who is firmly inside fashion’s inner circle. The proximity is there. The access clearly isn’t.
Of course, the defence will be that Meghan chose not to attend. That she’s selective. Focused elsewhere.

But the Met Gala isn’t the kind of invite you casually pass on – not when you’re actively trying to build credibility in that exact space.
At some point, absence stops looking like choice and starts looking like a pattern. And in fashion, patterns are everything.
The reality is awkward. A duchess once dressed by the world’s biggest houses is now missing from the one room that defines relevance. A woman launching fashion ventures isn’t in fashion’s most powerful room. Someone who speaks about the power of style isn’t part of its biggest night.
This isn’t just a snub. It’s a signal.
If the Met Gala is the ultimate test of status, Meghan Markle’s absence isn’t background noise. It’s the headline.
