Since dogs and humans do not share the same language, we frequently interpret what the other is communicating through body language and repeated words and commands. But this doesn’t mean we always fully understand what the other is attempting to convey.
Whether you consider yourself an expert in canine body language or are simply beginning to learn, certain behaviours may still catch you off guard. While some behaviours relate to normal dog instincts, such as tail wagging or ear movements, they can also represent an attempt to express an underlying need, emotion or health concern.
To illustrate some of these behaviours, one owner has created a TikTok account for his dog, Smuckers the Pitbull. While the account regularly features charming videos of the pitbull, the owner also uses the platform to shed light on particular canine behaviours, including why dogs occasionally place their paws on humans who are stroking them.
In the footage, Smuckers is shown being stroked beneath his chin by his owner. As he leans into the hand, the dog proceeds to raise one of his paws to rest it on the man’s arm while being petted.
The owner behind the video explains: “Did you know that if your dog paws you while petting them, that’s their way of petting you back.”
He continued: “Laying their paw on you is a sign that they love you and trust you.”
Why do dogs put paws on humans?
Dog pawing originates as an instinctive behaviour in puppies. As they mature, dogs discover that pawing is an effective communication tool because it typically results in their owners attending to their needs, according to PetMD.
The publication further explains that dogs generally work out that if they desire something — whether food, attention or access to a particular area — pawing at their owners is a reliable method of obtaining it. Given that pawing is a natural behaviour from birth, with puppies pawing at their mothers for milk, dogs will employ this communication method whenever necessary.
Additionally, owners will normally respond to pawing. However, since not all pawing constitutes a request for attention, it’s essential to remain mindful of your dog’s other behaviours.
Their body language can provide valuable insight into their emotional state and what they’re attempting to achieve through pawing.
One possibility is that they’re seeking your attention to signal they need to venture outside to relieve themselves. This is frequently accompanied by standing near the front door, waiting to be let out.
Many owners will also notice their dog becoming increasingly restless approximately 30 minutes before mealtimes. When hunger strikes, your dog may use their paw to indicate they’re ready to eat.
Dogs may additionally use their paws as part of a broader cluster of body language signals to convey emotions such as stress or anxiety. Should your dog display signs of anxious pawing, remove them from the situation promptly.
However, your pet may also place their paw on you purely as an expression of affection. Much like humans, dogs are capable of experiencing love and frequently demonstrate this through pawing, for instance by resting a paw on your arm while you are stroking them.
