New Back to Future documentary film coming to streaming this week | Films | Entertainment

The Back to the Future film trilogy continues to prove incredibly popular over 40 years on.

Creators Rob Zemeckis and Bob Gale have always said there will never be a fourth movie, so have sought to keep fans happy by expanding the franchise in other ways.

Over the years, there’s been an animated series, a theme park ride, comic books and video games.

But the latest iteration is the Olivier award-winning Back to the Future the Musical, which opened in London’s West End five years ago and is set to close in under 20 days ahead of a UK tour.

Now a feature-length documentary film about the making of the stage production, including its transfer to Broadway and around the world, hits streaming this week.

A Future on Stage: The Making of a Broadway Musical features new interviews with the creators and original Marty McFly star Michael J Fox.

Gale told Deadline: “Having Back to the Future the Musical playing to sold out houses around the world is a future I never could have predicted,” said Gale. “I thought getting the movie off the ground was insanely difficult, but getting the musical version on stage was even harder, and this documentary really captures what we all went through.”

A Future on Stage: The Making of a Broadway Musical arrives on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, YouTube and more from March 24, although it’s currently unclear if this includes outside the US.
